Phaninder Kumar Yarlagadda.Sep 11, 2026
Where to Use Murotherm KAM
Murotherm KAM is a specialist adhesive reinforcing mortar designed for bonding insulation boards, reinforcing facades with embedded mesh, and creating durable base coat systems. Its high bond strength and structural integrity make it the foundation of professional EWI (External Wall Insulation) and facade reinforcement projects.
EWI System Installation
Primary adhesive for bonding rigid insulation boards (EPS, XPS, mineral wool) to external masonry, concrete, or rendered surfaces. Creates strong mechanical and chemical bond for long-term system stability.
Reinforced Base Coat Application
Embedded mesh reinforcement mortar for facade stabilisation and crack bridging. Provides structural strength and distributes stress across facade surfaces before final finish coats.
Thermal Upgrade Projects
Complete thermal insulation systems on residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Superior adhesion ensures insulation boards remain securely bonded throughout building lifespan and seasonal temperature variations.
Facade Repair & Restoration
Reinforcement of damaged or aging facades with new insulation and mesh reinforcement. Re-establishes structural integrity and weather protection on existing building envelopes.
New Build Construction
Standard specification for energy-efficient new buildings requiring external insulation during construction. Integrates seamlessly with modern building codes and thermal performance requirements.
Commercial & Multi-Unit Applications
Specifier choice for large-scale apartment blocks, office buildings, and commercial facades requiring reliable, consistent performance across extensive building surfaces.
Substrate Preparation & Board Assessment
Proper substrate assessment and insulation board preparation are critical for successful KAM application. Bond strength depends on clean substrates, compatible board types, and correct mortar application technique.
Substrate Condition Assessment
Surface Stability: Substrate must be structurally sound with no loose plaster, paint, or cladding. Remove unstable materials completely
Moisture Levels: Substrate must be dry before board bonding. Damp walls reduce adhesion—allow adequate drying or apply damp-proof course first
Surface Cleanliness: Remove dust, algae, mould, dirt, and loose particles that prevent direct mortar contact and adhesion
Bond Strength Requirements: Hard, smooth surfaces (concrete, tiles) may require priming with Deep Primer or Concrete Contact to enhance adhesion
Thermal Performance: Verify board thermal rating meets building code requirements before installation begins
Pre-Installation Surface Preparation
Remove Loose Materials: Strip old paint, render, cladding, and any material not firmly bonded to substrate. Substrate must be load-bearing ready
Clean Thoroughly: Pressure wash if heavily contaminated. Remove biological growth (algae, mould, lichen) that weakens adhesion
Repair Substrate Defects: Fill large cracks, spalling, or cavities in substrate before board installation
Prime Hard Surfaces: Smooth concrete or tiled surfaces benefit from primer application to improve mortar bond and control suction
Allow Drying Time: After pressure washing or priming, allow adequate drying (typically 48-72 hours) before applying KAM
Verify Board Compatibility: Ensure insulation boards are appropriate for climate, building use, and fire regulations in installation location
Installation & Application Guide
Murotherm KAM is supplied as a 25kg dry powder requiring site mixing with water. Consistency, board positioning, and reinforcement placement are critical to achieving strong, lasting adhesion and structural integrity.
1
Mortar Mixing & Preparation
Add water to powder in ratio approximately 1 part water to 3-4 parts powder (follow product instructions for exact ratio). Mix thoroughly with power mixer until smooth, homogeneous consistency—no lumps. Allow mortar to slake 5-10 minutes, then remix. Use within pot life (typically 2-4 hours depending on temperature).
2
Application Method & Board Bonding
Apply KAM to substrate with toothed spreader (8-10mm notch) in even, parallel ridges. Typical coverage 4-6 kg/m² depending on substrate profile. Press insulation board firmly onto mortar, ensuring full contact. Stagger board joints in running bond pattern. Check plumb and level regularly during installation.
3
Mesh Reinforcement Installation
Once boards are set (minimum 48 hours), apply 3-5mm base coat of fresh KAM. Embed alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh (160 g/m² minimum) into mortar with 10cm overlap at seams. Trowel smooth finish coat over mesh. Mesh reinforcement provides crack bridging and structural strength.
4
Curing & Setting Time
Allow boards to cure minimum 7 days before applying base coats in favorable conditions (5-25°C, moderate humidity). In cold or wet weather, extend curing to 10-14 days. Protect from rain and frost during curing period. Do not load facade before mortar has fully set.
5
Finish Coat Application
Once base coat is fully cured and hardened, apply finish plaster, render, or coating per manufacturer instructions. KAM provides solid mechanical bond and level surface for professional final finishes. System is fully weatherproof after finish coat cure.
